Start with the map

Ocho Rios is a small town wrapped around a bay on Jamaica’s north coast, with hills rising steeply behind it. Bay Vista sits on those hills, on Shaw Park Ridge, so the town is below you rather than around you. That geography explains most of the practical things about staying here: the drive into town takes about a quarter of an hour on hill roads, the breeze arrives in the evening, and every attraction you have heard of is within twenty minutes.

West of town, along the coast road, you find Dunn’s River Falls (about 15 minutes from the villa), Mystic Mountain and Dolphin Cove (13 and 14 minutes). East are the White River (about 22 minutes), Reggae Beach (20) and, further on, Oracabessa and James Bond Beach (35). South, the old road climbs through Fern Gully into the interior. And immediately beside the villa, on the same ridge, are Konoko Falls and Shaw Park Gardens.

Understand the ship days

Ocho Rios is a cruise port. On a ship day the pier fills at eight in the morning and empties by four, and in between Dunn’s River Falls, Main Street and Island Village are crowded. From the balcony at Bay Vista you can see the ships come in, which makes the planning easy: on a ship day, go east to the river or the quieter beaches, or stay by the pool until the afternoon; on a day with an empty bay, do the famous things first thing.

Eat where the food is cooked

Jerk is the north coast’s cooking, and Scotchies at Drax Hall (about 21 minutes west) is where to eat it: chicken and pork over pimento wood, festival on the side, picnic tables under a roof. In town, Miss T’s Kitchen on Main Street does the Jamaican dishes people fly for: curried goat, oxtail, escovitch fish. For everything else there is the villa kitchen and a private chef, which is how most guests eat most nights.

Getting around

You do not need a car. The villa arranges airport transfers and private drivers, and a driver by the day is the easiest way to see three places without thinking about parking or the hill roads after dark. If you do drive, remember Jamaica drives on the left, roads are narrow and evening rain is common.

What to skip

The duty-free shopping on the pier is for cruise passengers with an hour to fill. The craft market on Main Street is better, and the fruit stalls better still. And unless you want to swim with them, Dolphin Cove can be replaced with a morning at the Blue Hole and an afternoon on the White River, which is how locals would spend the money.
