A cruise ship arriving in Ocho Rios bay, seen from Bay Vista Villa's hillside

Discover Ocho Rios

The town below the villa.

Waterfalls, blue holes, rivers, beaches and jerk, all within a short drive of Shaw Park Ridge. And a balcony from which to plan the day.

Why here

Everything you came to Jamaica for, fifteen minutes away.

Ocho Rios is the north coast’s crossroads: the island’s most famous waterfall, its gentlest river, a working cruise port and a dozen beaches within half an hour. Bay Vista sits in the hills above it, next door to Konoko Falls, so you can do the famous things before the crowds and be back by the pool for lunch. Drive times below were measured from the villa gate.

Dunn’s River Falls & Park

about 15 min · 5.4 km

Jamaica’s most famous waterfall: 180 metres of terraced limestone that you climb, hand in hand, from the beach to the top. Go early, or on a day without cruise ships in the bay (you can check from the balcony).

Konoko Falls & Park

about 11 min · 2.4 km

The villa’s neighbour on Shaw Park Ridge: gardens, a small museum, and a quieter waterfall to climb than Dunn’s River. Walkable by land; a few minutes by road.

Blue Hole (Island Gully Falls)

about 15 min · 4.9 km

A chain of blue pools and small falls in the hills behind town, with rope swings and cliff jumps for the brave. Local guides walk you up.

Ocho Rios Bay Beach

about 5 min · 2.9 km

The town beach behind the Ocean Village Shopping Complex, wide and sandy, with the bay you look down on from the villa. Sunbeds, food and calm water, about five minutes down the hill.

Reggae Beach

about 20 min · 9 km

A small cove east of town with a beach bar, loungers and clearer, quieter water than the town beach.

James Bond Beach

about 35 min · 22.4 km

At Oracabessa, below the estate where Ian Fleming wrote the novels. A peninsula of beach with a bar and, at weekends, live music.

about 7 min · 1.3 km

Twenty-five acres of tropical garden on the hill above town, with its own waterfall and a viewpoint over the bay. The villa’s nearest attraction.

Fern Gully

The old road south out of Ocho Rios, three miles of gorge under a canopy of ferns and hardwoods. Drive it slowly on the way to the interior.

Green Grotto Caves

about 49 min · 32.9 km

Limestone caves west along the coast, with an underground lake, used over the centuries by Taíno, Spanish and smugglers.

Firefly

about 51 min · 35.2 km

Noël Coward’s hilltop house above Port Maria, kept as he left it, with one of the great views of the island. The drive east along the coast is half the point.

Nine Mile

about 1 h 29 min · 46.2 km

Bob Marley’s birthplace and resting place in the hills of St. Ann. A long, winding drive; go with a driver and make a day of it.

Turtle River Park

about 11 min · 2.4 km

A landscaped park in the middle of town, with ponds, bridges and shade. Good for an hour between the beach and lunch.

03Eat

Jerk, fish and home cooking.

Jerk from the drum, fish by the water, Jamaican cooking in town. And a chef in your own kitchen if you would rather not move.

A tropical tablescape at Bay Vista Villa: heliconia, coral napkins and woven chargers

Scotchies, Drax Hall

Swim with dolphins, snorkel and kayak in a cove just west of town.

White River rafting and tubing

Yaaman Adventure Park

about 18 min · 7.7 km

On the old Prospect estate: ATV and buggy tours, camel rides, horseback riding and a Jamaican cooking class.

05Unwind

The art of doing nothing.

The villa was made for the days you do nothing at all.

A guest reading on a lounger beside the pool at Bay Vista Villa, cut-stone wall behind

The pool at Bay Vista

A book on a lounger against the stone wall, the giant chess set when you feel competitive, and a floating breakfast tray if you arrange one (an extra).

Sunset from the rock

The bench on the big rock at the front of the property has the best view of the bay. Take a drink up at six.

Ship-watching

Cruise ships come and go from the pier below the villa. From the balcony, every arrival is a front-row seat.

about 12 min · 2.6 km

Shops, a small beach and bars by the pier. Busy when a ship is in, calm when it is not.

The villa’s own neighbourhood: quiet hillside roads, gardens, the falls next door and the view that named the house.

St. Ann’s Bay

The parish capital, twenty minutes west: Marcus Garvey’s birthplace, a Georgian courthouse, and the site of Columbus’s first settlement at Seville.

A farm or a rum shop

Ask your host. The best afternoon of the trip is often the unplanned one.

Michelle’s picks

Where the host actually goes.

Michelle is writing her list: the jerk pit she trusts, the beach she takes her own family to, the bar with the best sunset. It will appear here. Until then, ask her on WhatsApp; the answer is usually a voice note.
