The short answer

December to April for guaranteed sun and cool evenings on the ridge, at the highest prices. May, June and early July for the same warmth with fewer people and better value. Late August to October is hurricane season’s peak, hot and humid, with the lowest prices and the greenest hills.

Month by month

December to February: dry, warm days around 28°C, breezy nights, the busiest weeks at Christmas and New Year. March and April: still dry, warmer, spring-break crowds on the beaches. May and June: hotter, with short afternoon showers; a favourite for weddings because the light is soft and the gardens are full. July: hot and bright. August to October: the wettest and stormiest months; travel insurance matters. November: the rain eases, the hills are at their greenest, prices are low until the middle of December.

Ship days

Cruise ships call at Ocho Rios most days in the high season and fewer in the summer. From the villa you can see whether a ship is in; on those days the falls and Main Street are busiest between nine and three.

For a wedding

January to April for the safest weather and the earliest bookings. May and June for value and light. Avoid September and October unless you are relaxed about a rain plan (the villa has one).

For the view

Any month. The sun sets over the bay every evening of the year, and the temperature of the sea barely moves.
